IAA 2011: Seat's Sharp Looking IBL Concept Sedan [Updated Gallery]

It may have an unsexy name, but Seat's latest creation, the IBL concept, is anything but lackluster when it comes to its styling.

The sharp looking study is a Ford Mondeo-sized sports saloon created to show off the latest evolution of Seat's design DNA, and while the Spanish brand says it does not pre-empt a specific model, its styling philosophy will be applied to the firm's future portfolio.

IAA 2011: Seat IBL Sedan Concept Leaks Online

Seat had told us that it would be unveiling a "new and exciting" concept car at the upcoming 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show, but a Spanish fan club beat them to it by publishing the first official photograph of the study, which it claims found on the pages of Spanish newspaper ABC. We asked around and can confirm that the scanned image is indeed is official.

2012 Seat Exeo Saloon and ST Refreshed Once Again

Starting from this fall, the Volkswagen Group's Spanish division Seat will offer a revamped version of its former Audi A4-based Exeo series that includes the sedan and estate (ST) models in Europe.

Report: Seat to Launch Four New Models in 2012 including a Four-Door Sedan

VW's Spanish subsidiary is expecting a 10 percent rise in sales this year and aims further growth in 2012, when it will launch four new models. According to CEO James Muir, new products such as the Ibiza ST and the Alhambra will boost Seat sales in 2011.

"We want to increase our 340,000 unit sales from last year – by 8 to 10 percent – thanks to existing models. We aim to sell 45,000 units of the Ibiza ST (station wagon) this year. And the Alhambra already is well above plan so we expect a full-year volume of 20,000 units. This proves that our brand is gaining strength," Muir was quoted as saying by Autonews Europe.

For 2012, the company has even bigger plans, fueled by the launch of four new models. "We will launch four new cars: the new Leon, a totally new entry-level model, a four-door sedan and a major Ibiza facelift," said Muir, who was appointed head of Seat in 2009.

Seat Adds Exeo 143HP 2.0-liter Diesel Engine with Multitronic CVT Transmission to the Mix

The Seat Exeo is essentially a previous generation Audi A4 with some “auto emocion” touches here and there. However, having an older platform doesn’t mean that it’s a bad car, especially when it comes with the VW Group’s latest powerplants and transmissions. The Multitronic CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) gearbox is one of them and now it has been paired with the 143HP 2.0-liter TDI diesel engine available on both the Exeo sedan and station wagon (ST) models.

SEAT Exeo: A Few More Pics, A Few More Details

SEAT Exeo BlackIn view of the fact that we're still several months away from the European market debut of the redesigned Audi A4 Exeo, SEAT decided to keep us on our feet by revealing a few more pictures of the mid-size sedan dress in black along with further details on the UK specification model. According to the Spanish automaker, all UK market Exeos will feature cruise control, steering wheel-mounted audio controls, dual zone climate control, USB connectivity (allowing MP3 music players to be used in-car) and alloy wheels as standard. -Continued

SEAT Exeo BlackSEAT UK Exeo Product Manager James Buckell said: "In today's challenging market, we know car buyers are looking for the very best value possible and, to that end, are doing our utmost to make the forthcoming Exeo the class leader in terms of both price and equipment."

"The fitting of luxurious features such as dual zone climate control across the entire range, as well as convenience additions such as USB connectivity, underlines our determination to make our new saloon a particularly well-specified drive."

The new medium class four-door sedan is scheduled to go on sale in spring of 2009. Available engine options will include 102HP 1.6-liter and 200HP 2.0 TFSI units as well as three turbo diesels with outputs ranging from 120 to 170HP.

SEAT’s Badge Engineering: What’s next, the Cupra R8?

SEAT Audi R8Badge engineering is a term used to describe the rebadging of one vehicle to another with minimum aesthetic changes. One example is the Korean Daewoo Gentra that has been morphed into the Chevy Aveo and quite recently, into the Pontiac G3. Another example is the SEAT Exeo sedan that premiered in Paris which is basically a previous-gen Audi A4 with a new fascia and tail lamps. But while no one actually cares if the Aveo is a rebadged Gentra (or the other way around), we reckon that VW Group’s decision to remask the B7 Audi A4 will have a negative effect on both brands and especially on Audi. -Continued

The VW Group has come a long way with Audi which until the early 90’s, was seen by most consumers as more of an alternative to BMW and Mercedes than an equal opponent. It took money, time and tremendous effort to establish Audi as a worldwide recognized premium brand.

The Germans have also been trying for years now to cultivate an image for SEAT as the youthful, sporty brand within the VW family –something like a Spanish version of Alfa Romeo. The results of course, are far from triumphant but no one is to blame than VW’s high-rank execs who for one decided to produce cars like the Toledo and its siblings, a vehicle that does not know if it’s a minivan, a hatchback, a liftback or a sedan.

It’s no secret that like other major players in the industry, the VW Group exercises component, platform and engine sharing within its brand portfolio that includes Skoda, VW, Audi, SEAT, Lamborghini and Bentley. But by introducing a car like the Exeo that is clearly recognizable as a rebadged A4, one of Audi’s most important and well sold models, you’re basically weakening the brand’s premium image (at least in Europe) in the same way that Chinese knockoffs do.

As for SEAT, while the Exeo might bring new clientele into its showrooms, we believe it further deepens the problem with the Spanish marque’s identity crisis. Just take a look at the automaker’s vehicle line-up: Ibiza, Leon, Toledo, Altea, Altea XL, Altea Freetrack, Alhambra and Exeo. The only (relatively) sporty and youthful cars we see here are the Ibiza and Leon.

SEAT Exeo Update: Official High-Res Photos and Details

SEAT EXEO SEDAN 2009While SEAT would like us to believe that the Exeo is an all-new proposal in the mid-size sedan segment, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist with a microscope to clearly see the previous-gen Audi A4 lurking between the restyled fascia and tail lights. Don’t get us a wrong, even with today’s standards, the A4 is a great car and hopefully SEAT will retain the German sedan’s qualities. It’s just that we were expecting something more unique from the Spanish automaker and not a 'Cordoba-ized' Audi... -Continued

SEAT EXEO SEDAN 2009Commenting on the Exeo, SEAT’s president Erich Schmitt said: “With the Exeo we are offering a car for dynamic and sporty drivers of the B segment. Furthermore now we have a vehicle for our current customers who are ascending from the A segment. The Exeo is also an interesting alternative for quality aware company car drivers who are looking for driving fun but who are cost aware and pay attention to low fuel consumption and low emissions.”

The Exeo, which also be available as an Avant err station-wagon, will be launched with three 4-cylinder petrol-engines ranging from the –please let me die- 102 HP 1.6-liter unit to a more modern 2.0-liter TFSI with 200 HP and three common rail Diesel engines with outputs ranging 120 HP to 170 HP. SEAT said that five of these six engines are turbocharged meaning that the Exeo will also be offered either with a 1.4-liter TSI or a 1.8-liter TSI petrol engine as well.

Concerning the vehicle features the Exeo will be offered with a latest generation navigation system, a new infotainment system with multiple functions and connections (MP3, MPEG4, IPOD, USB, Bluetooth), as well as for the first time a sun roof with solar cells powering a ventilation system.

SEAT's Opel Insignia and Toyota Avensis rival will be manufactured in Martorell near Barcelona, Spain with sales set to start in Europe as of spring 2009. There will be three versions: Reference, Stylance and Sport with an entry price of around 22.000 Euros.

SEAT Exeo Official Images: Rebadged Audi A4 Breaks Cover

The latest in a long line of leaks today comes to us from Spain with the revelation of the first photos of the SEAT Exeo (pronounced ex-ay-o) or shall we say, SEAT’s version of the previous generation Audi A4. The new Exeo that was apparently designed during a short business lunch break somewhere in the central offices of the VW Group, is based on the A4 with the only visible styling differences being the new nose, tail and mirrors. Same goes for the interior but to be completely fair, SEAT’s design team received the okay from high ranking VW officers to enhance the cabin with new trim options and seat materials. -Continued

Details of specifications and powerplant options haven’t been disclosed yet, but expect to see a mix of engines from the previous Audi A4 and VW Group’s current line-up including the 2.0 TFSI gasoline and 2.0 TDi diesel units. SEAT’s new Ford Mondeo and used E46 BMW 3-Series rival will go on sale in Europe in early 2009 first in sedan and then in station-wagon body-styles.

SEAT Exeo: Rebadged Audi A4 Sedan to be revealed in Paris

SEAT has confirmed through a new dedicated webpage on its Dutch site that it will unveil the new Exeo Sedan at the forthcoming Paris Motor Show. Even though VW’s subsidiary doesn’t actually name the car, the teaser images leave no doubt that this is the Spanish automaker’s new mid-size sedan. As we previously reported here at Carscoop when images of the Exeo Sedan and Station Wagon where leaked into the web after the design of the car was registered at the European trademark office, the mid-size SEAT is essentially a rebadged version of the previous generation Audi A4. -Continued

As we speak, VW has given the ‘okay’ to transfer the previous A4’s production line from its headquarters in Ingolstadt to the Spanish automaker’s Martorell factory near Barcelona (…) so expect SEAT’s Ford Mondeo and Opel Insignia rival to be available for order in Europe during the first quarter of 2009.

2010 Seat Exeo Revealed and It’s a Rebadged 2008 Audi A4!

2010 Seat ExeoThese official images of the new Seat Exeo that were registered at the European trademark office leave few doubts that the Spanish carmaker’s forthcoming mid-size sedan and its station wagon sibling are nothing more than rebadged versions of the previous generation Audi A4 Sedan and Avant respectively. The Exeo, which will not replace the Toledo in Seat’s range, was created to offer the Spanish brand a worthy rival in the European D-Segment against the likes of the Ford Mondeo, Opel Insignia and Renault Laguna.

2010 Seat ExeoAs you can see, Seat’s design team had a pretty easy job with this project. From what we can make from the photos, the only parts of the Audi A4 that were redesigned are the front and rear end. While we don’t have any pictures of the Exeo’s interior, we gather that it will most likely be lifted off the previous generation A4. –Continued

Seat officials have confirmed that the Exeo will enter production in early 2009 so don’t be surprised if we see it making its global premier at the Paris Auto Show in October. The Exeo will be offered with a variety of powertrains including VW’s latest TSI turbocharged gasoline and TDI turbo diesel units.

Thanks for the Pics Jose M.! - Opening Picture Edited by CarScoop
