Mitsubishi President Confirms Next Lancer Evo with Hybrid Powertrain, May be Combined with a…Diesel!

Perhaps the Maya were right and the world will come to an end in December 2012. In which case we’ll never get the chance to see what a Lancer Evolution hybrid-diesel looks like in 2015.

But let's take it from the beginning. The hybrid part of the story is not just another one of those crazy rumors that pop up on the net. In fact, it is as official as it gets since it comes from the mouth of Mitsubishi president, Osamu Masuko.

Masuko revealed to British magazine Autocar that the next generation of the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo will ditch the regular 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder unit, which has become a mainstay of the 10 previous versions, in favor of a hybrid powertrain.

Fisker Karma Rated at just 52 MPGe by EPA, Records its First Sales

With this final hurdle now behind, Fisker announced today that it sold its first $97,000 Karma. “With receipt of EPA certification in hand, we have achieved a major milestone by recording the first sales of our groundbreaking Karma sedan”, said an exuberant Henrik Fisker who is the CEO and founder of the company.

Peugeot 908 Hybrid4 Racer Undergoes its Maiden Track Test

At the Geneva Motor Show last March, Peugeot unveiled a new version of its 908 LMP1-class endurance racer called Hybrid4 and as its name suggests, it uses a hybrid powertrain.

Peugeot did not enter its new diesel-electric endurance racer in the last 24 Hours of Le Mans, nor in any other event so far for that matter, relying instead on the current 908HDi diesel. The reason is that the brand-new model was still at the early stages of development and is scheduled to compete in 2012.

BMW Reveals Sixth Generation of 3-Series Sedan [Full Details and 140+ Photos]

It’s official; as promised, BMW unveiled today the brand-new 3-Series codenamed F30. The sixth generation of its compact luxury sedan, which in its five iterations since its launch in 1975 has sold more than 12 million units becoming the standard in its category, will be available to markets worldwide from February 11, 2012.

According to BMW’s CEO, Norbert Reithofer, the new 3-Series is “the sportiest car in its segment and offers sheer driving pleasure at the highest level”.

The sixth generation mid-size BMW has grown considerably compared to its predecessor. It is 93 mm longer and an augmented wheelbase at 2,810 mm (+50mm) as well as wider front (+37 mm) and rear (+47 mm) tracks. The increase in dimensions promises to address one of the model’s disadvantages compared to the competition, namely that of rear passenger space.

The new model now offers 15 mm more legroom and 8 mm more headroom for rear seat passengers. Yet, despite the increase in size, numerous weight saving measures help make the new 3-Series up to 40 kg (88 lb) lighter than the model it replaces (depending on the version).

Nissan Develops New Hybrid System with a 2.5-liter Supercharged Engine for FWD Cars

Not to be outdone by its Japanese and European rivals, Nissan has developed a new hybrid system for front-wheel drive vehicles, the first details of which were released today along with the announcement of its next generation XTRONIC CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) for use with 2.0-liter to 3.5-liter engines.

Nissan came a bit late to the hybrid game and was forced to license hybrid technology from its Toyota rival for use in certain markets in 2004.

“It was a bit of a blow to our pride, but that was the right thing to do under the circumstances,” says Mitsunobu Fukuda, a senior powertrain engineer at NATC (Nissan Advanced Technology Center).

“Instead of rushing out a ‘copy-cat’ hybrid we wanted to take the time to develop our own hybrid, one that is clearly different – and better. I think we’ve managed to do that.”

We've brought you plenty of news on BMW's upcoming iteration of its bread-and-butter 3-Series, but our spies have just snagged what they believe to be an early prototype of the hybrid version that will join the recently announced ActiveHybrid 5 and the already available ActiveHybrid X6 and 7.

While the prototype model captured on the 'Ring looks pretty much stock, our man with the long lens tells us that it features the mandatory hybrid stickers to warn emergency crews about the car's electric operating system in the event of an accident.

The Bavarian automaker confirmed the availability of "hybrid versions of the next 3-Series" sedan codenamed F30 during a press conference in late 2010.
